About Maldives
The Maldives is a long chain of small islands and atolls in the Indian Ocean with a population of just over a quarter of a million. Although Dhivehi is the native language of the Maldivians, English is spoken by most people, and more languages are spoken by the employees of the numerous tourist resorts.
The national religion is Islam, but women play a much more prominent role in Maldivian society than they do in other Islamic societies, and it is not uncommon for women to hold public office or managerial positions. Nevertheless, female visitors should take care to wear somewhat modest clothing in public areas, because standards of female dress are a bit more conservative in Maldives than they are in the West.
