Things to Do in Maldives

Scuba Diving

For a large portion of visitors to the Maldives, this activity is the draw. It would be impossible to find a Maldives resort without a diving school instructors to get people breathing underwater and teach them a little more about the undersea world. Likewise, every resort rents out all the basic equipment necessary for a snorkeling experience. Some even have underwater still or video cameras for hire. Night dives can be arranged, and all the resorts have at least one boat dive scheduled every day. Steps are taken in the Maldives to prevent damage to the reefs and the depletion of fish stocks.

Snorkeling

Equipment for this activity is also available at all the resorts, and there are so many shallow reefs in the Maldives that many people are happy to stick to snorkeling and not dive any deeper. Some resorts even hold snorkeling excursions, like an underwater nature walk, and most have “house reefs” located close to the beach.

Submarine Rides

For those who prefer not to get wet or would like to take a closer look at the reefs without worrying about their equipment, an underwater viewing submarine is now available. The craft dives to 100 feet and is an excellent way to catch a glimpse of the underwater world in comfort. The submarine tour reservation office can be found in Malé.

Surfing

The Maldives has only recently begun to develop its surfing industry. The best waves are reportedly found off of Malé during the southwest (May-October) monsoon season. This unfortunately means that many of the days that bring wind to whip up the surf will also bring rain, but this probably doesn’t make too much of a difference to many surfers.

Fishing

Locals and tourists alike enjoy fishing in the waters of the Maldives. Fishing at night is popular, and many resorts offer regular fishing trips at night. Big game fishing is done during the daylight.

Dolphin and Whale Watching

The Maldives is a fabulous place to catch sight of your favorite cetaceans; in fact, this country is considered to be one of the best places in the world to see them. Special aquatic guests include spinner dolphins, a particularly active and acrobatic species, and the blue whale, the largest mammal on Earth. Many of the resorts offer excursions, and special “safari” boats are also available for longer trips out to sea.
